Who is Patroklos

Your Brother In Arms

The Greek hero, Patroklos, played an important role in Homer’s Iliad, an episode of the epic story of the ten year siege of the city of Troy by the Greek army.

The major theme of the Iliad is the quarrel between the Greek king Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles (yes, the one who was killed by an arrow in his Achilles tendon). Angered, Achilles (the war hero) declares that he would no longer fight for Agamemnon (the king), but will go home. The result of his wrath (Μῆνιν, wrath, is the first word of the Iliad) was that the war started to turn sour for the Greek army.

Fortunately, there is Patroklos, Achilles' friend. Homer named this friendship “ἑταῖρος” (hetairos), which is best translated as “brothers in arms” who will rather fight for each other than for their army. Patroklos decided to wear the armor of his friend and, thus, show his army the return of Achilles to the battlefield. Lead by Patroklos, the Greek army pushed the enemy back into the city.
